Makalit, is a Berlin (Germany) – based design label founded by Jacobus van der Meer. We collaborate with local craftsmen to manufacture high-quality and timeless furniture and objects in small batches.
“As the grandson of an architect, we had a lot of furniture at home designed by my grandfather from the ’50s and ‘60s. There were handmade chairs, cabinets and lamps produced on a very small scale in cooperation with a local craftsman. My grandfather’s high quality furniture is still around, solid and timeless. These objects and furniture inspired me to redesign them and give them a contemporary update, resulting in the birth of my design label Makalit. A label for well-designed, timeless, handmade furniture and high-quality objects, designed to last a lifetime.”
Our first product is the Pontier N°01 armchair and is a re-design of the chair created in the 1950s by the Dutch architect and my grandfather A. J. Pontier.
With the redesign of the Pontier N°01 armchair not only did a high-quality armchair emerge but I also took a journey into my family’s past. In the newly discovered stories, sketches and scale-models, the work of my grandfather came to life and gave me a better understanding of his visual style and design identity.
While staying true to the original design, this redesign comes with a higher seat and robust foam upholstery to meet today’s quality standards. Each chair is numbered and includes a certificate of authenticity.
